Description

At 14,505 feet elevation, Mt. Whitney is the highest peak in the lower 48 states. Not surprisingly, it is one of the most popular wilderness destinations in the country.

The Mt. Whitney Trail is in the John Muir Wilderness. This area was designated by Congress in the Wilderness Act of 1964. According to the act, a wilderness is “an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.” Wilderness provides “outstanding opportunities for solitude or a primitive and unconfined type of recreation”. When you travel in wilderness, you will find none of the conveniences of modern life. You will be responsible for your own safety, as well as for protecting wilderness character.

There are several routes up Mt. Whitney, the most popular of which is the Mt. Whitney Trail. When it is free of snow, the Mt. Whitney Trail is suitable for less experienced hikers. However, when snow is present safely traveling the trail may require additional experience, special skills, helmets, ice axes, crampons, and skis.
